Malka Mari National Park

Malka Mari National Park is an IUCN Category II park designated in 1989 perched along the Daua River on the Kenya-Ethiopia border covering an area of approximately 1,500 square kilometers in size.

Daua River is in the extreme north eastern part of the country on the Mandera plateau thus the Park can be accessible via the Mandera Airport and is probably the least visited national park in the nation.

The park is mostly semi-arid bush land and scrubby grassland with riparian woodland and along the river and there are several plant species in the park that are unique to the area.

Besides the fact that Malka Mari National Park is the most remote Park in Kenya, its major attractions such as Malka Mari fort, valleys and hills provide beautiful and attractive scenery which are a worthwhile experience for tourists and visitors.

The common inhabitants of the park are nomadic herders of the Gurreh community though they are few in number and mostly dispersed over a wide region and Karache Urane is located at the southern end of the Park.

The Southern part on the other hand hosts the Awara Plains and the boundary of the park to the north terminates on the Kenya-Ethiopia border hence the extreme ends of the Park can serve as major tourist attraction sites.

However, visitors should be aware that it is really very difficult and such a long journey to get to Malka Mari National Park by road thus the best option that a visitor should consider is to charter a plane.

There are two airstrips that can be used as a means of arriving at Malka Mari National Park of which the first airstrip is located at Bannissa well as the second one is a small airstrip that is situated within the park.

The park consists of a prestigious and exclusive hotel De L Horloge for providing shelter to the Park’s visitors. The hotel offers a wide range of amenities that are highly attractive to visitors touring Malka Mari National Park.

Some of the notable amenities include accessibility to wheelchair, shower or private bath, pets are allowed, air conditioning, exercise facility, handicap rooms, lounge, and business services.
